Instruments of Justice: The Civil Rights Imagery of Artis Lane

  • Collected Detroit 2439 4th Street Detroit, MI, 48201 United States (map)

Join me for a talk featuring Civil Rights imagery of renowned 94-year old painter and sculptor Artis Lane, whose bust of Rosa Parks was recently selected by President Biden for the Oval Office.

Bust of Rosa Parks by Artis Lane, Located at the US Whitehouse Oval Office

The talk, which complements the exhibition Steps towards Justice: Artis Lane’s Portraits of Rosa Parks at the Collected Detroit gallery, will focus on Lane’s images of Civil Rights icons/issues, including Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth, and Nelson Mandela. However, it will also explore the deeper parallels between Lane’s art and her own inspiring life story, notably: her family’s abolitionist history, her personal relationships with many of the icons she portrayed, and her own struggle to achieve acclaim as a black woman in the field of art.
