Join me on Saturday evening, September 11th for the Exhibition Opening of Steps toward Justice featuring portraits of Rosa Parks by the renowned 94-year-old painter/sculptor Artis Lane, whose bust of Parks was selected for President Biden's Oval Office.
The exhibition, which runs September 11-October 23, will feature multimedia imagery -- from paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and prints to a Presidential medal -- relating to Civil Rights icons/issues across the globe. It will also document Lane's design process, exploring the ways in which she channels her personal experience/inspiration to the viewer through art.
While Lane has famously celebrated civil rights icons such as Parks (personal friend), Mary Ann Shadd Cary (great-great aunt), Sojourner Truth and Nelson Mandela through art, the exhibition will also address the artist’s own life story, notably: her family’s abolitionist history, the civil rights icons she connected with, and her own struggle to achieve acclaim as a black woman in the field of art.
Experiential activities in the galleries will allow viewers to connect on a personal level with the artist, her subjects and with deeper social justice issues, past and present.
Admission is Free - REGISTER HERE
